Is ‘build Twitter lists’ on your to-do-list?

There is nothing more satisfying than crossing something off a list. Well, that’s the case if you are an organised freak like myself. I have lists for work, lists for the kids, shopping lists, lists of things I really must get round to selling on e-bay… But recently, I’ve been using a whole new set of lists and these are the lists on Twitter.

Twitter is a great way to promote your business but it’s also a great source of information. Whether you are gathering intelligence on the latest market trends, looking for specific content for your own personal development, or if you just want to see what your favourite celeb has been up to.

Building a list is like building a community of people that hold the same interests as you. You can find people who inspire you in business or personally and you can enter into a dialogue with these people if you wish to. You can follow your customers and gain insight into their promotional activities and you can conduct research to establish competitors and identify potential customers.

Once you have followed all these key people/businesses you will soon realise it’s difficult to keep on top of everything and the things you really care about can be missed. Lists can help you get organised and find what you are looking for quickly.

At Marketing Pace we currently have 20 lists which include business development contacts, social media marketing, inspirational speakers and our favourite comedians to bring a smile to the day.

So, if I want to quickly see what’s being talked about on social media, I can go to that list and only see those tweets. It’s a great way to make sure you don’t miss anything important and also an easy way to find content to talk about or re-tweet if you are looking for inspiration.

So what do you need to do?

1. Click on the lists tab on your profile page

2. Click ‘Create list’

3. Give your list a name and short description then decide whether you want it to be private (so just you will see) or public (anyone can subscribe to).

It’s really up to you whether you want to leave your lists public or private but if you do leave public make sure you are not giving anything away that you don’t want to. If you have spent hours conducting market research you might not want to give it away for free. On the other hand, leaving lists public does make it easier to build a community and clients/prospects might appreciate you offering them something of value. You can even use other people’s lists (if they are public).

So get organised and enjoy your new lists while I cross off ‘write blog about Twitter lists’ from my list!
